To write a blog has become a hobby of everyone. Students also enjoy writing blogs. There are so many topics on which they can write a blog.

There are many blogging sites that will help them to write a blog. These sites are the Blogger, WordPress, Typepad, etc. The most popular is the WordPress. It has many blogs built using this platform. WordPress is free to use and has an open source project.

A WordPress theme is a blog software free download that is used to build your blog. In this software there are many templates or files which work together to give you the look and feel for your blog.

First select a category

To select a theme for your blog from WordPress you have to select a category first. The category defines all about the blog and what you want to write on that blog so the proper audience can follow your blog. If you want to write about travel sites, then your category would be travel. It will help you find the right theme. You can find the categories in the WordPress theme directory or in Daily Blog Tips, etc.

Next select the colors and layout

The next step is to select the colors and layouts. You can select a color of your choice and then match them with your theme. However, the color can be changed later also if you are not comfortable with it.

To decide a layout is more difficult and you can get the help of the themes given in wordpress.org. It will give you an idea as to what the layout looks like. After that, you can select a layout by choosing the column, like single column, two columns, with side bar, without side bar, three columns and so on. Many of the layouts are specifically made for photo centered and video centered blogs. You should first try out the layout you have selected and get the feel of it with some test posts. After that, you can finalize it.

Know the objective of your blog

The objective of your blog should be decided very carefully. It will help you select your theme for the long-term. If you are making your blog just for the sake of writing your thoughts and ides, then it does not matter much. However, if you are starting a blog to make some money, then you have to pay attention to aspects like advertisements, widgets, protection from spam comments, SEO, etc. and to be able to have proper support for your blog software and the free theme you have downloaded.
