When Kids Write Poetry

There are many ways kids write poetry. Teachers and parents can use creative methods to increase a student’s interest in poetry.

  • Usually kids write poetry after they have been exposed to it. If you only read rhyming poems to children, that is the type of poetry they will write. Be sure to expose them to different types of poems.
  • Some children like to read aloud. Other children may prefer to illustrate the poem or compile a photo essay to accompany the poem. Kids write poetry in a manner that is comfortable for them.
  • Kids write poetry about themselves and their lives. Encourage them to explore their dreams through verse. Begin a poem by saying “What if…” Much like other types of creative writing, poetry is a way for them to talk about difficult issues, also.
  • Asking students to memorize, recite, or answer factual questions about poetry does not create a love of the medium. Ask more imaginative questions such as what they would like to ask the poet or what memories the poem stirs up.
  • Pre Teens are often fans of humorous poems, and these can be a great way to get them interested in writing. Also, poems that are related to their lives are very popular with youngsters.
  • When kids write poetry, you are encouraging a special relationship with words. They will also be able to explore their feelings and ideas in a different way than usual.
  • Provide your child with access to great books. Take them to visit the local library. The internet is starting to have some poetry resources that you can research. Teachers can find local poets through magazines and invite them to visit their school. A real live poet can be a great influence on young authors.
  • Parents and teachers can also check online poetry contests for kids. Most children love contests and this can be a fun way to encourage creative poetry development. If your child enjoys writing and art, have them cut out words from magazines and create a collage poem.

Educators and parents can find many creative ways to promote poetry with young writers. It is a literary art form that must not be allowed to die in today’s fast-paced digital world.
