Creative Writing For Kids

There are many different forms of writing. One interesting variation is creative writing in general and also creative writing for kids. Unlike technical, academic, journalist, and other forms, creative writing encompasses the imagination of the author with characters, storylines, etc.

Types Of Creative Writing

Typical displays of creative writing include novels, short stories, and poems. These are often fiction in nature. However, this sort of writing can also include nonfiction works such as autobiographies, biographies, blog posts on various topics, etc.

It is a form of writing that will be interpreted by the reader depending on the viewpoint of the user. For example, if a reader were to read an article on a news event, that information is commonly factual and objective. The writer is merely conveying the information. On the other hand, if a reader were to read a short story, which is a creative writing piece, the author has a style and message that they are conveying, one which the reader may or may not like. In other words, some stories get great reviews, but they can also receive poor reviews based on the opinions of the readers.

Despite the various interpretations of creative writing, it is a form of writing that strengthens one’s storytelling ability and voice. If a person wants to learn how to write a novel or a short story, creative writing exercises are a fantastic start.

Creative Writing For Kids

The beginnings of this form of imaginative writing do not have to commence at the adult level. Creative writing for kids puts children at an excellent advantage when it comes to storytelling. By nurturing the ability to convey one’s voice at the childhood level, voices become even more polished and strong as adults.

There are many strategies that parents can do to help their children develop their creative writing skills. Here are four top tips.

1) Encourage your child to read. Aside from actual writing; reading is the number one way for a child to gain an interest in creative writing.

  • Help your child signup for a library card. Take them to the library.
  • Or buy them an eReader device and assist them in purchasing eBooks online.
  • Look for books that are written for children and young adults, available in a wide variety of categories, from everything from classics to adventure, to science fiction, and much more. These days there are multitudes of opportunities to read.
  • Motivate your child to start a goal of reading one book every week. By reading and seeing the imagination that other’s display, it can ignite the creative spirit in your child.

2) Creative writing for kids can be found at local neighborhood groups or writing camps.

  • Workshops or camps designed exclusively for creative writing are a great way for a child to spend their summer learning a beneficial craft. The art of creative writing is strengthened with practice.
  • These activities allow a child to explore their imagination and put it to good use in the form of the written word.

3) Encourage your child to take creative writing courses in school, such as in high school.

  • Sometimes a child has a choice as to certain classes they can take in school. If creative writing is one of the choices, encourage your child to participate in such a course.
  • Even if your child has indicated that he or she wants to be an accountant or a math teacher or a gym instructor or something that normally would not involve creative writing, boosting storytelling and imagination skills is never a waste of time and makes for a well rounded child.

4) Help your child start a creative writing blog.

  • One of the best things about blogging is that it’s free. All a child has to do is initiate a blog at one of the free blogging sites. After the blog is titled and setup, the child can begin to write posts for the blog.
  • Encourage your child to start a creative writing blog by posting blog entries of their storytelling and written creations, whether they are short stories, poems or novel entries. Soon your child will receive comments from readers who follow the blog and who look forward to blogging entries from your child.
  • As the parent, you can monitor the blog for any unusual or harmful activity to keep the blog safe for your child.

The benefits of writing are terrific to encourage, particular when a person is young. Those who take an interest in reading and writing become people who are interested in the world, in people and in the situations that surround us.

Exercises in creative writing for kids strengthen a child’s voice and imagination and can improve one’s self esteem. In today’s world TV, video games and cell phones have become a big part of young people’s lives. Therefore, you can help your child to become well rounded by introducing and encouraging creative writing in their lives.
